G-tube Out - Oh No!

I always figured Ben's G-tube would accidentially be pulled out from his belly eventually... I just didn't know when. Well last night we got to experience this! Our night nurse noticed that Ben rolled over, whimpered a little, then fell back asleep. Shortly after that, she started to smell formula. She checked his bed and it was soaked! After following his G-tube all the way up, she noticed it wasn't in his belly, but laying next to him - water balloon still in tack. It must have pulled out when he rolled over (pretty amazing that all Ben did was wimper considering there is a water filled balloon in his stomach holding the G-tube in and that just ripped out). Because the stomach is such a big muscle, the hole starts closing immediately. I was still up and she came in and got me. We tried to put his current size tube in, and it didn't fit - the hole was already too small. We tried the size smaller and still didn't fit. So I grabed a suction catheter and shoved that into his stomach just to make sure the hole didn't close completely. The last thing I wanted to do was go to the hospital for the night because we were suppose to get bad winter storms starting at midnight (which we did). The nurse and I kept on trying to switch back and forth from the catheter to the smaller G-tube, hoping to get it in. After holding the smaller size G-tube in the stoma and applying a great deal of force, over time we were able to get it in. What a relief! And the best part of all, sweet Ben was so good during the whole process. He only cried a few times, played with his slinky the rest. He is such a trouper. Crisis averted!

I can't believe that was the first time! WOW! We have had that happen nearly 10 times!

Glad you were able to get one in. Did you put lubricant on it? That helps gets in back in pretty easily.

Much love to you! Amy and Max

Wow!! I have never had Eva's come out at home only once at the hospital when she had her heart surgery. The nurse was right there when it happened and we put it right back in, I had never been so freaked out in my life...LOL!!
Glad you didnt have to go to the hospital I know the snow is crazy here too.
Hugs,
Crystal and Eva

From a fellow CHARGEr mom who has literally re-inserted g-buttons hundreds of times, I'm glad your first time was uneventful!

Peyton pulls his out several times a week(when he wakes up in the middle of the nite).Thankfully, his stoma stays open for us because sometimes we don't discover it for a while. So the saying,"I could do it in my sleep" is actually true here in our house:) I'm hoping it's a while till baby Tate's comes out!

I love, love, love Ben's videos. He is sooooo sweet!! Another mechanic in training(that's what we used to say Peyton was going to be as he grew up when he traveled around on his back)!

Hope you're not housebound too long. We have just barely escaped the snow here. Just really cold rain. Looks like Ben will get to use his sled some more!! Yay!!

thanks for sharing precious Ben.

Good work! We've had to go to the hospital too many times because of Evan's g-tube getting pulled out. The last couple times we've been able to get it in without any trouble though.

Hugs,
Sarah

PS If it makes the image any easier, it's unlikely the full diameter of the balloon passed through Ben's stoma...it kind of compresses and elongates as it pulls through (so it's maybe half the size). This is per Jeremy, as he has caught the button half-way out before!
