We are home from the hospital now and Ben is doing well considering (he is such a trooper). He is in a Spica cast, which is also referred to as a body cast. They were able to dip it down in the front to expose his g-tube, but the rest of his body is cast from his armpits down. There is also a metal rod cast between his legs separating them. He has to wear the cast for 6-weeks and I was told that kids with other issues tend to take longer to heal. He can't move and we need to reposition him every 2-4 hours to avoid sores - which is basically tilting him a little to the right, then to the left, etc. Diapering is a bit challenging. We have to tuck these pads into the cast opening they left between his legs, then tuck a diaper in, then wrap a diaper two sizes larger around the whole thing. Every 10 days Ben will need to get x-rays to make sure he doesn't have to be recast or manipulated again (which would have to occur in the OR so I'm praying that doesn't happen).
And as if our day wasn't bad enough, a deer ran into our car on the way home from the hospital with Ben. Luckily, it only left a small dent.
Hopefully we've already been through the worst of it and these next six weeks will go by quickly.

Oh Ben, Amy & Mike. Like you said, this is no way to begin the new year. What a horrible day....one that I'm sure you are glad that's over. Ben is a little trooper and always seems to handle adverse situations better than the rest of us. Please let us know if there is anything you need...errands, food, etc. It will be a tough 6 weeks, but after that, hopefully, there will be some good news. We are praying for a speedy recovery and can't wait to see the little guy. If anyone can make a cast like that look good...it's Ben. Black is a good color for him. Hang in there and PLEASE PLEASE let us know if we can do anything. We love you all.

Oh, Amy, how terrible! I can't imagine! Please give that little guy a big hug from us. And let us know if there's anything at all we can do for you. If you need errands run or just need a break for a few minutes, we'd be glad to help out.
I hope the next six weeks goes by fast for all of you and Ben heals quickly.
Big hugs to you all,
Leslie, Arlin & Katie
Poor little guy. What a way to start the new year. But even in a body cast Ben still looks too cute. The next six weeks will be rough, but if anyone can get through them it's the three of you. Give Ben a big hug and kiss for me.
Love,
Aunt Theresa
we are crying for ben in LR, how aweful is that.... so sorry for you guys. We'll be praying for an extra strong healing for ben.
extra love and care sent to you guys ... ... MK, Blake, Lucas and Pierce
Oh my gosh, how horrible. I am sitting here in shock and just don't understand how this could happen. What was your PT's reaction? Holy moly...how incredibly awful with everything else medically that he has endured. Please keep us posted my friend...and you will be in my thoughts.
PLEASE say you are able to get some extra nursing during this time!!! Definitely try if you haven't already!
Love you guys, Amy and Max
Sorry to hear the way the New Year started out for the three of you. Hopefully the next six weeks will rush by and everything will be just fine. Take care and just wanted you to know that you are in my thoughts and prayers.
The above post was from Uncle Chuck, forgot to add that.
Jen,
Just got back from vacation and was visiting CHARGE friends blogs - wow! How horrible for Ben (and your family). What a way to start the new year. I hope the six weeks pass by quickly and are uneventful.
Your family is in our prayers.

Amy,
Our thoughts and prayers are with you--I can't imagine how awful it was to see Ben hurting that way (Jeremy broke his ankle and has a pin--he said that hurt so bad he can't imagine how breaking a femur would feel). One of Evan's old hospital "room-mates" had that cast on--it didn't look very comfortable (to say the least), his parents also made mention of the challenges of diapering.
Hugs,
Sarah, Jeremy, and Evan
OMG!! POOR BABY!! I hope the 6 weeks go fast. What was the PT doing when this happened???
hugs and kisses to Ben,
Crystal and Eva
